Improving the flame retardant performance of rubber mats can be approached from multiple angles. In selecting rubber materials, priority should be given to rubbers with inherent flame retardancy, such as neoprene rubber, whose molecular structure contains chlorine, producing hydrogen chloride gas during combustion and inhibiting the combustion reaction. Synthetic rubbers with added flame-retardant components can also be used.

Adding flame retardants is a key method. Inorganic flame retardants, such as aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide, decompose upon heating, absorbing heat, lowering the temperature, and producing water vapor to dilute the oxygen concentration, thus inhibiting combustion. Organic flame retardants, such as halogenated and phosphorus-based flame retardants, release hydrogen halides during combustion, capturing free radicals and terminating the combustion chain reaction; phosphorus-based flame retardants form phosphoric acid or polyphosphoric acid during combustion, covering the rubber surface and isolating oxygen and heat. Adjusting the rubber mat formulation can also improve flame retardant performance. Using highly saturated rubber as the base material reduces unsaturated bonds, lowering the likelihood of combustion. Adding synergists works in conjunction with flame retardants to improve flame retardant efficiency; for example, antimony trioxide combined with halogenated flame retardants enhances the flame retardant effect. Processing technology also plays a role. Appropriate temperature, time, and pressure during vulcanization allow rubber molecules to form a stable cross-linked structure, improving flame retardant properties. The mixing process ensures the uniform dispersion of flame retardants and other compounding agents, resulting in consistent overall flame retardant performance of the rubber mat. Furthermore, surface treatment of the rubber mat, including coating with a flame-retardant layer, forms a protective film on the surface, preventing flame spread and heat transfer, further enhancing flame retardant performance.
